Transdev Ferry Deckhand in New Orleans, Louisiana

Performs routine manual work aboard a state owned marine vessel, and collects and records tolls from boarding vehicles and/or pedestrians.


  • Fastens hawsers and mooring lines to vessels, wharves, barges, piers, or pilings, and checks towing rigging, lines, wires, etc.

  • Lowers and raises anchors by hand or by using the vessel’s winches; coils and splices rope and makes rope fenders; makes eyes in cable.

  • Operates traffic ramps and gates on vessel; directs and parks traffic on and off of vessel; classifies vehicles, enforces restrictions such as over-weight vehicles.

  • Collects toll fees from drivers of vehicles and pedestrians boarding vessels; makes change as required; sells toll script and gives receipts when requested.

  • Counts cash received and makes deposit slip for delivery to Accounting Department; examines bills and coins received and prepares receipt form for any monies found to be counterfeit or foreign money; records information necessary to report short change claims.

  • Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing bright work, etc.

  • Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on vessels.

  • Moves swing wires.

  • Operates bilge pumps.

  • Assists in deck and equipment repairs.

  • Assists in handling discharge lines and dredge anchors.

  • Handles lines in recovery of vessels adrift.

  • Mans and operates emergency safety equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, etc.; searches for drowning victims, recovers body, and places body in body bag.

  • Serves as lookout to assist in safe navigation of vessel.

  • Follows safe workplace practices.

  • Ensures that work area is clean and organized.

Other duties as required.


Preferred Education, Licensing, and Certifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent, such as GED, preferred

  • Must be eligible for a surety bonding

  • Valid TWIC Card

Experience :

  • No experience required

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to use a wide variety of cleaning tools, hand tools, and marine equipment.

  • Ability to safely direct traffic and assist with vehicle parking, loading, and unloading.

  • Ability to use basic math (addition, subtraction) to make change, count monies received, and complete basic accounting department forms.

Travel requirement (as a percent): <5% for occasional meetings

  • Must submit to drug testing and a criminal background check

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.

  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear.

  • Regularly required to balance; stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and smell.

  • Regularly required to work at various heights.

  • Regularly required to lift up to 100 pounds.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather and environment conditions.
